Data for Place: Good practice in using imperfect data effectively

This in-person event aims to share and discuss good practices for accessing and utilising data effectively, as well as making the most of available data. It will provide a space to exchange experiences around challenges and opportunities in data projects, and how these inform decision-making.

The event will bring together researchers, analysts, policy professionals and practitioners to explore how data can be accessed, used and maximised more effectively to support better decision-making.

It will provide a space to share practical experience of working with data across different contexts, discuss common challenges in data projects, and identify opportunities to address data gaps using innovative and alternative sources. Through a mix of expert presentations, discussion and networking, participants will reflect on what works in practice and how lessons can be transferred across places and sectors.

The programme is structured around two themed sessions.

The first focuses on working with data in devolved nations, with speakers sharing insights from Scotland and Wales on navigating data landscapes, governance, and place-based challenges.

The second session turns to data gaps and alternative data sources, highlighting emerging approaches such as use of alternative and administrative data, and data-sharing agreements to improve evidence bases where traditional data are limited.

Lunch and refreshment breaks are built into the programme to encourage informal discussion and networking, alongside structured breakout discussions and a final feedback session.
