SECRET CEREMONY by Lost Art Media is screening Penda's Fen, a 1974 folk-horror cult classic, in the sumptuous interior of St. Bride's Church, on June 17th 2026.
This stunning baroque church on Fleet Street, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is dedicated to Saint Brigid, an Irish saint who may have originated as a pagan goddess.
It's the perfect screening location for this film, which offers a kaleidoscopic fusion of pagan and Christian imagery, bringing together surreal visions of Jesus and King Penda, the last pagan ruler of England.
FILM SYNOPSIS
In pastoral England, a clergyman's son encounters strange apparitions: angels, demons, the ghost of Edward Elgar. These mystical experiences push him to question long-held assumptions about his identity and nation, in a whirlwind celebration of cultural hybridity and transformation.
Directed by Alan Clarke and broadcast in 1974 for the BBC series Play for Today, Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle cited Penda's Fen as an inspiration for his horror blockbuster 28 Years Later.
