Domestic Abuse in LGBT+ Communities (Delivered by Galop)
Mon 2 Dec 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM GMT
Online, MS Teams
Description
Lunch and Learn session as part of Haringey's programme for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Abuse.
LGBTQ+ Experiences of Abuse:
- 64% of LGBT+ people have experienced anti-LGBT+ violence or abuse.
- 53% of LGBT+ survivors of sexual violence feel that their LGBT+ identity was linked to, or the reason for, at least one instance of sexual violence they were subjected to.
- 55% of LGBT+ people have been subjected to one or more abusive behaviours by a family member and/or partner/ex-partner.
Yet LGBT+ people are regularly forgotten in the public narrative about abuse, and many LGBT+ people struggle to access support for the violence and abuse they have faced.
This introductory session provides an overview of the unique experiences and barriers faced by LGBTQ+ survivors of abuse. The session will cover the wide range of gender-based violence faced by the community, including domestic abuse, sexual violence, honour-based abuse, hate crime, and so-called ‘conversion therapy’.
There will also be information on the services provided by Galop and referral pathways.
