Stained Glass: Light, Colour, and Craft (SEND)
How does working with light, colour, and craft help young people build future-ready skills?
This immersive, hands-on workshop invites pupils to explore the art and craftsmanship of stained glass, guided by professional stained-glass artists and creative-industry mentors through Striving for Excellence in Our Work, Reflections of The Lord Mayor’s learning platform.
Through a sensory, hands-on process, participants will experiment with shape, pattern, transparency, and colour to design and prototype their own stained-glass roundel using safe, youth-friendly materials that mimic the look of real glass. Inspired by pollinators — the butterflies, bees, and beetles that keep the natural world in balance — pupils explore how colour and transparency interact. The activities are designed to be sensory-friendly and adaptable for different abilities, making the session accessible for a wide range of SEND learners. Along the way, they develop practical employability skills including creativity, problem-solving, hand–eye coordination, patience, resilience, and collaborative thinking.
By connecting traditional craft with modern careers in communication and design, the workshop demonstrates how visual storytelling can open pathways into media, advertising, architecture, craft professions, and digital design — echoing the approach that earned Reflections the Championing Careers for SEND Award at the London Careers Festival 2025.
Each participant will leave with a tangible piece of work to showcase and a strong sense of pride in what they can create.
About Striving for Excellence in Our Work
Striving for Excellence in Our Work brings professional stained glass artists into schools to inspire creativity, confidence, and practical employability skills. Through hands-on workshops and the annual Stained Glass Roundel Competitions for SEND/AP and primary schools, pupils explore the power of storytelling and craftsmanship while connecting art with real-world learning and opportunity.
