The event will explore how the UK’s foreign, development, and economic policies can prioritize climate as a critical geopolitical issue, essential for enabling the net zero transition and preserving international stability. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for questions and an engaging discussion with the audience.
About the report
In Strategy and justice: managing the geopolitics of climate change, Peter Hill considers the UK’s foreign, development and economic policies as they relate to climate. The report puts forward that governments, including the new UK Government, should treat climate as a first-order geopolitical issue to enable the net zero transition and prevent climate issues from further fragmenting the international order.
While the transition to a net zero global economy is now all but inevitable, advanced economies are paying insufficient attention to what is needed to accelerate the journeys of others or to the spillover effects of their policies on the rest of the world. This inattention will come at increasing cost both to the objectives of climate change policy and the UK’s geopolitical interests.
Perceptions that fiscal constraints and public opinion prevent governments doing what is both necessary and in their interests are generally not backed up by evidence. The report argues that for the UK and its close partners, the demands of strategy and justice are broadly aligned and can be met at a limited cost and with public support.
