"As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison."

Nelson Mandela

Hello LAWPC!!

I don't know about you, but with the holidays quickly approaching, the topic of forgiveness feels very relevant. While I have done a lot of work over the years to heal and forgive, I have found it helpful to revisit some of my old wounds from time to time as well as address any new hurts that may have come about. I attended a Circle of Forgiveness with Niki Schmid a couple of months back and found the method to be deeply beautiful and moving. Read more about Circles of Forgiveness, the founder Olivier Clerc, and our forgiveness mentor Niki Schmid below.

What is a Circle of Forgiveness?

“Forgiveness”… Few words are as deeply meaningful yet as poorly defined as this one, making its practice all the more challenging. This ritual aims to redefine the concept in a profoundly hopeful way while offering each participant a firsthand experience of it. Above all, it is a process to be lived.
Circles of Forgiveness are a structured, experiential practice created by French author and educator Olivier Clerc, inspired by a profound, life-changing experience of forgiveness he had in Mexico in 1999 while attending a teaching with Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements. He later shared this experience in his book The Gift of Forgiveness, now translated into ten languages. From this transformation, Olivier developed the Circle of Forgiveness in 2012, a simple yet powerful transpersonal ritual that has spread to more than 20 countries since. In the time together participants are invited to experience forgiveness beyond the intellectual level, acknowledging hurt, grief, anger, resentment, and other emotions. Through this process, they can gradually open toward greater compassion, inner freedom, and a renewed relationship with themselves and others.

The Ritual

A transpersonal ritual, both simple and powerfully therapeutic, the Circles of Forgiveness allows participants to practice forgiveness—toward others and themselves—even toward those who are absent or deceased. It helps our hearts heal and break free from layers of resentment, sadness, or hatred that prevent us from loving fully.

It is possible to forgive everything . . . without excusing anything.

Participants will also discover that it is possible to forgive everything… without excusing anything. While forgiveness heals the heart, we also have a mind—and discernment is essential to avoid confusing forgiving with excusing, condoning, or even reconciling. Regaining inner peace does not prevent us from standing for justice; on the contrary, it strengthens it.

Our Forgiveness Coach/Mentor

Niki Schmid, a forgiveness coach-mentor, was certified by Olivier at the first international facilitator training with IFA (The International Forgiveness Association) in France in spring of 2026. She is deeply grateful and feels blessed to be part of this pioneering group and to bring this heartfelt ceremony  to her community and onto U.S. grounds spreading this modality with new trainers to come in the near future.
