Overview:

Previous engagement by MHCLG's Local AI team found that councils want clearer, more practical guidance and usable tools to support safe and ethical AI adoption and use. The team is now developing a Responsible AI Charter and AI Policy Template for local government and would like LOTI members to help us test and shape them. These resources are still in development, so this will be a participatory workshop rather than simply a presentation. They’ll introduce the thinking behind the Charter and Policy Template and then invite you to test the drafts against the realities of AI governance in your council.

In particular, they would welcome your views on:

  • whether the Charter provides a useful and realistic baseline for responsible AI in local government;
  • whether the Policy Template could be practically adopted and adapted by councils;
  • what might be difficult to implement in practice; and
  • what is missing or needs to change before the resources are finalised.

The drafts cover areas including lawfulness, governance, human oversight, transparency, training and environmental sustainability. We'll share the documents in advance so participants have an opportunity to review them before the workshop.

Your feedback will directly inform the continued development of these resources.
