Storytelling With Sonification

Mon 30 Nov 2026 13:00 - Fri 4 Dec 2026 17:00 GMT Online, Zoom

Learn how to tell compelling, emotive stories with data sonification

With Duncan Geere and Miriam Quick from Loud Numbers

Our sonification training covers both the theory and practice of sonification, with a focus on storytelling and musical sonification. With data sonification in your skillset, you can add audio to your visualizations, tell data stories with sound, or even create pieces of music driven by data. Sonification is a fantastic tool for reaching blind or partially sighted audiences, and it can also add a unique emotional resonance to your work.

In this two-part intermediate to advanced workshop, aimed at people with some sonification experience, we’ll go deeper into our storytelling process. We’ll go over:

  • Why sonification is good for telling stories, with best practice examples
  • How to find data stories
  • Sound choices for sonification: creating atmosphere and emotion with sound
  • The sonification tools landscape, including Data Sonifyer
  • Data selection, processing and transformation
  • Parameter mapping that's effective and intuitive
  • Time-series sonification: time mapping, choosing a tempo, communicating time passing
  • Telling the story: choosing the right format, explaining mappings, scripting, voiceovers

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have told a sonification story of your own using Data Sonifyer or an equivalent digital tool, and you will have the knowledge you need to create impactful and immersive sonic narratives from data.
