Empowering parents and carers to have conversations about self-harm that foster trust and healing.
The continued rise in self-harm among young people is a concern facing many parents and carers today. We need to rethink how we respond to and talk about teenage self-harm to dismantle the stigmas and reverse the current trend.
Our training takes a uniquely science-based approach to promote a new understanding of self-harm that combines knowledge and insight with lived experience. It aims to empower you to have conversations about self-harm that build trust and support healing.
Expect to learn:
🌍 The challenge of being human in today's modern world.
💡 What self-harm is and why so many young people are doing it.
🧠 The neuroscience behind why it “works”
👀 How to spot the signs and start the conversation.
🔄 What we need to break the cycle and build long-term resilience
Who it’s for
Parents, carers and adults who are concerned about young people who may be at risk of self-harm.
Why attend?
When a parent discovers their child is self-harming it can be distressing and difficult to know how to respond and what to do next. This webinar brings a new understanding of why young people self-harm and aims to empower you to be more calm and confident about spotting the signs and having conversations that support trust and healing.
How the course is delivered
Online via Zoom by Beth Derry, founder of Lovely Messy Humans, and Rose Rowkins, founder of Start the Conversation.
Who we are
Beth has dedicated over two decades to helping people understand and explain complex issues as a scientist and communications expert for the world's biggest brands. Having self-harmed when she was young, Beth has made it her goal to improve understanding and address the fear, shame and confusion that exists around self-harm. Her academic background, research and conversations with mental health professionals and young people have given her a unique perspective on why people self-harm and what they need most. She candidly shares her own lived experience to help others understand how we can break the cycle and foster long-term resilience
Rose Rowkins has worked in mental health for over 20 years and as a suicide prevention trainer since 2015. She is on a mission to help people overcome their deep-rooted fears and find the words to have courageous and potentially life-saving conversations. She is an integrative humanistic counsellor (specialising in working with young people) who has personally taught 1000s of people around the world the skills and confidence to talk about sensitive issues such as suicide and self-harm
