Drawing inspiration from the decadent Richard Long & Associates (RLA) sound systems of New York & Chicago’s disco, post disco & house era’s (Paradise Garage, Studio 54, Muzic Box etc) and the freeform styles of the original eclectic dj's - David Mancuso, Larry Levan, Ron Hardy, Daniele Baldelli - Supermax is where music aficionado's, fashionistas & wild things get down to the audio sexual soundtrack of DJ’s DJ, the inimitable Billy Woods.

Hailed as "Glasgow's King of Disco" by renowned dj duo Optimo thanks to his ahead of the curve genre bending no boundaries approach to djing during the 90's and having performed alongside all but few of the djing greats that are still with us - legends that include Francois Kervorkian, Daniele Baldelli, Nicky Siano, Danny Krivit & the enigmatic Moodymann - Billy's focus in recent years has been in developing his own personal disco odyssey in the guise of his ‘Supermax' party - the name inspired by the music of Kurt Hauenstein's legendary cult band who's music Billy pioneered so many years ago.

Bucking the trend of the corporate dance music media driven guest DJ circuit - a practice not only hugely detrimental to the development of local scenes but also environmentally unethical & unsustainable given the excessive levels of air travel involved, Supermax is built around the firm conviction that the best clubs & parties are based around resident dj’s & their clientele eg. David Mancuso's Loft, Larry Levan's Paradise Garage, Ron Hardy's Music Box, Frankie Knuckles Warehouse, Baldelli & Mozart's Cosmic Club, Junior Vasquez's Sound Factory, Paul Trouble Anderson's Loft.

High quality audio reproduction is fundamental to any great party and inspired by his meetings with the late great David Mancuso many years ago Billy aims to provide a world class sonic experience with a particular focus on showcasing original 12 inch disco records from the golden age of vinyl mastering. The Supermax sound system, acoustic treatment & sound management is courtesy of Glaswegian club sound system engineer, loudspeaker designer & long-term collaborator Rory Watson of We Enjoy Sound.

Billy was a pioneer in the re-introduction of vintage rotary DJ mixers due to their superior sound quality and was the first dj in the UK to regularly utilise Bozak mixers at his Outer Drive & Supermax events in the early 00's. This includes a DLA and an extremely rare early D model Bozak which was originally owned by legendary disco dj Jim Burgess and installed at 70’s New York discotheque ‘The Ice Palace’ on Fire Island where Jim Burgess & Roy Thode performed.

In 2016 Billy was the first dj in the country to employ a custom designed ‘Isonoe’ rotary mixer designed & built by the world's finest mixer designer Justin Greenslade. Highly regarded venues such as Public Records NYC, Brilliant Corners & Spiritland all followed suit and only a handful of unique custom Isonoe mixers exist - the others having been designed & built for an illustrious clientele of Dixon, Floating Points, James Murphy, Two Many Dj's & Theo Parrish.

Each month the Supermax production team spend several hours on the day of the party installing Billy's personal DJ set up which includes Technics 1200G turntables, Isonoe & Bozak mixers, super rare custom Nagaoka titanium carts, mirrorballs, balloons, decorations & projections, all of which are painstakingly put together to ensure a dance floor experience like no other.

Supermax aims to present an alternative to the audio destroying digitally quantised, auto-synched format of dj’ing that currently dominates the scene.

At 17 years & counting Supermax is the longest running zero guest solo resident underground dance party in the world today and a throwback to an era where dj's would take control of the music selection, environment & experience across the entirety of the night, all the while developing a sense of community, mutual experience, continuity & rapport with the dancer.

At Supermax you will encounter a soundtrack that will expand your mind and open your eyes & ears to the possibilities. Expect a heady cocktail of the super obscure alongside the unexpected, from past, present & future as well as an ample helping of Billy’s exclusive curveballs edits (many of which have gained support & play from the legendary DJ Harvey) all within a hot, dark, smoky environment that evokes the raw sensibilities of pre-commercialised club going.

Eclectic & expansive & possessing the unique ability to traverse the wild tangents music has to offer all the while tearing up the dancefloor rulebook in the process to the ecstatic response of party revellers, DJ Billy Woods radical selections & unorthodox approach are as likely to challenge & confound those of the most flexible of musical tastes as they are to inspire those of the most hardened opinions to re-engage & embrace genres, songs & tracks that may have previously dismissed as unfashionable, unthinkable, unworkable.

This could include anything as outlandish as drenching party-goers in a ten minute long sonic thunderstorm only to bring the house down with a maelstrom of dance floor friendly rock or having the audacity to en-trance an audience with one of his legendary hypnotic hour long edits should a promoter dare book him to play a mere one hour slot!

Whenever you hear Billy DJ you can expect the unexpected yet as those who’ve experienced him in action will testify, however far out the music gets somehow his sets always manage to come together all at once, often in the most unlikely or unexpected of ways, to make perfect sense just in time for re-entry.

Having played a key role in reviving interest in disco through his freeform approach to djing during the 90’s & permanently sold out 5 year Melting Pot residency at the start of the noughties and having pioneered the use of rotary dj mixers & audiophile sound systems at his cult like 20 year Supermax & Outer Drive disco odysseys long before trends caught up, Billy is almost uncannily ahead of the curve and whenever he takes to the decks whether an aficionado or not you cannot walk away, you cannot fail to be inspired, and you cannot resist the urge to give in to the dance!
