A workshop for cis & trans gay, bi & queer men and non-binary people with Tim Foskett and Vincent Goyon.

Details

Few of us make it into adulthood without some aspect of shame coming along for the ride. The marinade of oppressive messages we grew up with leaves a trace and sometimes a deeper stain

“If you put shame in a petri dish and cover it with judgment, silence, and secrecy, you've created the perfect environment for shame to grow until it makes its way into every corner and crevice of your life. If, on the other hand, you put shame in a petri dish and douse it with empathy, shame loses its power and begins to wither.” Brené Brown

For many of us this results in a residue of self-sabotage, self-loathing and/or self-hatred that impedes and disturbs our lives - including our attempts to be intimate with others.

This workshop will offer a space to understand the effects of shame, offer tools and experiences to help you tackle them in your life and genuine support from a community of kindred spirits to help you grow.

“Shame about woundedness keeps many people from seeking healing. They would rather deny or repress the reality of hurt. In our culture we hear a lot about guilt but not enough about the politics of shame. As long as we feel shame, we can never believe ourselves worthy of love.” bell hooks - All About Love: New Visions

The journey of self-love starts by showing ourselves to others – in all our complexity - and seeing love, understanding and compassion reflected back in their eyes. Come and join us!

“What we practice at the small scale sets the patterns for the whole system... Shame is a barrier to transformation. We must learn to look at our mistakes, our wounds, and our patterns without shaming ourselves, so we can actually change them.” Adrienne Maree Brown - Emergent Strategy

“Toxic shame gives you a sense of worthlessness, a sense of failing and falling short as a human being. Toxic shame is a rupture of the self with the self.” John Bradshaw - Healing the Shame That Binds You

Tim Foskett is one of the founders of Loving Men+, a group and individual psychotherapist and has been facilitating workshops for over 25 years. Tim will be assisted by Vincent Goyon and a support team.

Access Information: The Skylight Centre has one small step at the entrance and three steps inside the building to access part of the space, including the toilets. There is one toilet that is large enough for a wheelchair (but it is up three steps). Assistance is available to lift your wheelchair if needed.

Loving Men+ welcomes cis & trans gay, bi & queer men and non-binary people, from all walks of life who want to develop their capacity to love. We particularly encourage participation from Black, Asian and other ethnic minority men, HIV positive and negative men, younger and older men, disabled men, trans men and non-binary people. In 2023 we added the + to our logo in recognition that non-binary people have also always been a valued part of Loving Men+ since we began in 2003.
