SF: Activism and Resistance
SF: Activism + Resistance is an academic conference hosted by the London Science Fiction Research Community (LSFRC). In an age when Me Too, Black Lives Matter, Decolonise the Curriculum, Refugees Welcome, and movements for global solidarity with oppressed populations have become part of mainstream discourse, it is vital to re-examine the relationship between activism, resistance and the mass imagination vis-a-vis science fiction.
For more information about the conference theme, you can read the call for papers here.
Conference dates:
- Thursday 9th September (half day)
- Friday 10th September
- Saturday 11th September
Held over two and a half days, our online conference will include keynotes from Grace Dillon and Radha D'Souza, a creator panel featuring Jeannette Ng, Rivers Solomon and Neon Yang, a roundtable on Indigenous Futurisms in Games with Santo Aveiro-Ojeda, Weyodi Oldbear and Johnnie Jae Morris, workshops, panels and much more.
Once you have registered, we will contact you with details for how to join the event on Blackboard Collaborate closer to the event date. You can view the provisional schedule via our website.
Regarding our costs: LSFRC is not run for profit and none of its directors draw a salary. All our events are either free or have free ticket options. We have no formal institutional affiliation – although we are grateful to the Centre of Contemporary Literature at Birkbeck, University of London, the School for Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and University College London (UCL), for funding toward the SF: Activism + Resistance conference – and do not charge membership or subscription fees of any sort. All money we receive goes towards covering the costs of our events (e.g. digital services, website costs, design fees, and honoraria/expenses for invited guests etc.).
Regarding institutional funding: if a university or other institution is willing to fund your registration, we are happy to provide official letters of confirmation and/or invoices to help support any claim or form you have to submit. Just contact us by email and we will do what we can to help.
