SF + Extraction is an academic conference hosted by the London Science Fiction Research Community (LSFRC). It is our view that the theme of Extraction is urgent and at the same time broad and receptive to diverse interpretations. We think with, through and about extraction in all its forms – as extraction of human and nonhuman subjects; appropriation of knowledge and indigenous practices; instrumentalisation of landscapes beneath, upon and beyond the Earth; parasitism; pollution as colonialism; the accumulative schematisation of linear temporal frames; forcefully extracted emotional labour; legacies of trauma and more – and its relationship with sf both as an extractive form of fiction and as a corrective/counter to extraction. From asteroid mining to dream harvesting, we want to engage with sf texts and ways of thinking across all media that explores, unravels and seeks to push beyond extraction’s mastery of the past, present and future.

For more information about the conference theme, you can read the call for papers here.

Once you have registered, we will contact you with details for how to join the event on Blackboard Collaborate closer to the event date. Once available, you will be able to view the conference schedule via our website

Regarding our costs: LSFRC is not run for profit and none of its directors draw a salary. All our events are either free or have free ticket options. We have no formal institutional affiliation – although we are grateful to the Centre of Contemporary Literature at Birkbeck, for funding toward the SF + Extraction conference – and do not charge membership or subscription fees of any sort. All money we receive goes towards covering the costs of our events (e.g. digital services, website costs, design fees, and honoraria/expenses for invited guests etc.).

Regarding institutional funding: if a university or other institution is willing to fund your registration, we are happy to provide official letters of confirmation and/or invoices to help support any claim or form you have to submit. Just contact us by email and we will do what we can to help.
