Description
KATE YOUNG
“Kate
Young creates such an utterly unique world, I’d never heard this
before, you’ve never heard this before either. Only a musician who can
find the thing about themselves nobody else has can achieve such a feat.
Kate is unequivocally one of those extraordinary people” Martin Green (Lau)
Kate Young has emerged as one Scotland’s most innovative composers and
musicians. She is driven by the exploration of new sounds found in
traditional musics around the globe, which feed into her compositional
world. As a musician, Kate combines voice with fiddle-playing techniques
to conjure intriguing soundscapes as she navigates her way across
musical genres.
Over the last five years she has developed her interests in British
plant lore and folktales, learning directly from books and then weaving
information into her songs and compositions as a means to perpetuate and
empower traditions at high risk of being lost. In 2016 she completed a
significant commission for Celtic Connections’s New Voices and wrote a
suite of pieces around the theme of the natural world. Her response – a
complete repertoire of songs inspired by British medicinal plants, set
to string quintet, with harp, double bass and percussion – was met with
wide acclaim.

with support from Lucy & Hazel
Lucy Huzzard and Hazel Thompson are a queer folk duo charming audiences with self penned folk laced with humour, harmonies and heartache. With influences drawn from a lifetime steeped in traditional English and European folk music, song and dance, Lucy and Hazel combine a love of groove, soulful raw harmonies and passionate song writing to give you hope in these strange times.
On melodeon, clarinet, guitar and two distinct and powerful voices, Lucy and Hazel’s set will take you on a journey through themes of land and climate justice, feminism, apocalypse, power and platonic love. They will be releasing their debut EP for summer 2024.
With inspirations spanning from Joni Mitchell and Ivor Cutler, to stories of resistance to injustice, they are a powerful and entertaining folk duo on the scene. They have performed many venues over 2023 including Shambala Festival, The Land Workers Alliance Skills Fair and sell out shows at The Greystones & Cafe #9.
Lucy and Hazel are surely the queens of the new vibe of British folk to be emerging from the radical activist left. Folk music just got very exciting.
