This free event will include an insightful keynote session and three interactive workshops. Delegates will have the opportunity to pose questions to our expert speakers during the Q&A panel and network with like-minded professionals throughout the day.
Why attend?
This event will be an engaging course, exploring the power of embedding maths in context to enhance learner understanding and engagement. Throughout the day, you will discover practical and creative strategies to seamlessly integrate everyday maths into lessons, making maths relevant and relatable to learners' lives to enhance learning motivation. During the session, you will:
- Uncover the benefits of contextualised maths instruction and its impact on learning
- Explore creative ways to incorporate everyday maths into lessons, covering topics like household finances, nutrition, banking, and job applications
- Develop engaging activities and projects that bring maths to life and enhance learner motivation
- Learn how to effectively assess learner understanding of maths concepts through the use of real-world contexts.
Who is it for?
The sessions are geared at anyone with an interest in improving their numeracy teaching skills and anyone interested in making maths more accessible to all.
How much is it?
The event is free to attend, with refreshments and lunch included.
Keynote speaker: Susan Hough. Susan is a Senior Lecturer of Mathematics at Manchester Metropolitan University, with 18 years of experience in Secondary schools. She has worked extensively on the development of a classroom approach based upon Realistic Maths Education (RME). This has taken the form of two funded projects: ‘Developing maths in context’ and ‘Making Sense of Maths,’ both of which involved ongoing CPD for teachers and measuring the effects of such an approach on pupils.
Workshop sessions: 3 workshops will be delivered by MEI exploring everyday places we encounter maths in the real world, how we can bring maths to life, and the benefits of using context to solidify maths understanding. MEI is a charity organisation aimed at improving maths education for all. They offer a range of consultancy and support services to schools, colleges, businesses, and other organisations.
Multiply is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Multiply Capacity Building is being part delivered by Luminate Education Group and led by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority as part of the Mayor’s ambition to make West Yorkshire the best place to work, learn and live.

- Unlocking Potential: Guiding Learners to Regulated Qualifications – 5th March, Keighley College
