Cloth and Memory Workshop: Reclaiming the Ritual of Shroud Making

Shrouds have wrapped our loved ones for thousands of years—simple cloths that offer dignity, care, and connection. Today, as we seek more personal and gentle farewells, the practice of shrouding is quietly returning.
In this workshop, textile artist Dagmara Rudkin will reflect with you on the role of textiles in memory-making, and how they can help us anticipate grief while honouring and celebrating a life. As we chat, draw, cut, and stitch, we’ll explore how textiles hold meaning and how making can help us face loss with tenderness.
All materials will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring personal fabric samples for consideration.
The Benefits of this Workshop
This workshop will provide a supportive and gentle space for thoughtful conversations about death and dying. Through hands-on exploration of textiles and garments, you’ll discover creative and personal ways to craft burial shrouds or commemorative cloths. This process raises awareness and encourages personal empowerment, allowing you to take an active role in end-of-life and burial choices.

About Luna Arts
A community arts organisation founded by visual artists Wendy Pye & Dagmara Rudkin, that delivers art workshops that promote well-being, including encouraging conversations on challenging topics to support mental health.
In February 2025, Luna Arts was awarded a one-year Arts Council project grant to research contemporary beliefs, attitudes, and rituals surrounding funerals, life ceremonies, and memorialisation. The project involves developing & piloting workshops that use creative expression to facilitate challenging conversations about mortality and legacy, helping participants process emotions and articulate thoughts on death and dying.
