Please join Suzanne Tay-Kelley and Maw Shein Win for a Maker, Mentor, Muse Summer Salon Found & Lost: Generating New Work Inspired by Southeast Asian/Southeast Asian American Poetry & Art on Saturday, August 3rd, noon to 2:00pm PT. In this lively generative workshop, we will explore selected works by Southeast poets and artists and consider these questions:

• What can get lost in our cultural, personal, and familial histories?
• How can we reclaim and transform these histories through our writing?
• How do we find, define, and even create new “family” through community?
• What can be recovered and rediscovered through mythmaking and storytelling?
  

Participants will engage with works by poets and artists from across the region, finding inspiration to create new writing by reading and seeing with fresh eyes. Facilitators will offer helpful handouts at the end of the salon.

Price for this salon is on a sliding scale: $10-$35. 

About Your Facilitators

Suzanne Tay-Kelley is a former journalist, Bay Area nurse, graduate of the University of San Francisco MFA program in poetry, born and raised in Southeast Asia. Her poetry has appeared in Four Leaf Collective (4/2024), Quiet Lightning (2/2020, 5/2020), and been anthologized in Still You, Poems of Illness & Healing, Wolf Ridge Press (2020), The Healing Art of Writing, University of California Medical Humanities Press (2013), and Tell Me Again: Poetry & Prose, University of California Medical Humanities Press (2011).

Maw Shein Win's most recent poetry collection is Storage Unit for the Spirit House (Omnidawn). She is the inaugural poet laureate of El Cerrito, CA and teaches poetry in the MFA in Writing Program at USF. Along with Dawn Angelicca Barcelona and Mary Volmer, she is a co-founder of Maker, Mentor, Muse, a new literary community. Maker, Mentor, Muse is a teaching platform founded in 2022 by Mary Volmer, Maw Shein Win, and Dawn Angelicca Barcelona. Hailing from three distinct backgrounds, generations, and spiritual traditions we believe community is essential to building a satisfying and sustainable literary life and that true success requires balancing all three artistic roles: maker, mentor, muse. In collaboration with Alta Mesa Center for the Arts, sponsored by Orinda Community Church, we are building a place where artists embrace practices that honor process, spiritual growth, connection, and ongoing community with other writers.
