An Introduction to Plate Lithography Printmaking with Catherine Ade 

This workshop is designed for complete beginners, no experience is required! Learn the basics of drawing, etching and printing your own plate lithograph. Print using the intaglio press at Make.

You’ll be shown how to use lithographic charcoal on a ball grained aluminium plate. This isn’t ordinary charcoal, but these charcoal litho sticks act just like it!

Unlike the traditional drawing materials which contain grease, litho charcoal does not and can therefore be smudged and moved around the plate. Deletions can be made with a rubber.

Equipment: All materials and tools are included in the ticket price. 

Experience: No previous printmaking experience is necessary - this course is open to complete beginners or more experienced printmakers who are interested in learning more about lithography. 

Age: Participants must be aged 18 years or older to participate 

About Catherine Ade:

I explore the dualities of identity, the slippery nature of memory and the passing of time. I make lithographs on limestone and grained plates about my grandparents farm house that depict the landscape and the lives passing through it. Printmaking is a central tool, and I use the process of stone lithography to paint and draw directly onto the limestone or plate. The use of water tusche wash occurs frequently as both material and metaphor; rain, tears, vessels expanding the notion of fluidity of memories and cycles of nature. I am drawn to states of transition; between exterior and interior worlds; psychological and physical, absence and presence, surface and depth.

I studied at Cardiff Met, UWE, Bristol, Tamarind Institute for Lithography and I run a collaborative lithography studio, The Lemonade Press, in Bristol, UK. I am also the co-author of Lithography: An Artist’s Guide, Published in 2023 by Crowood Press.

On the day: 

All equipment and materials will be provided. 

Please do wear comfortable / old clothes. Aprons will be provided, if needed. 

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included and will be available on the day. Our Café is also open should you wish to purchase other refreshments during the workshop.
