Join us for this weekend online course to learn Insular Illumination and Calligraphy like the style used in the Book of Kells.

Saturday 23 September 10am - 4pm - learn insular half uncial calligraphy
Sunday 24 September 10am - 4pm - learn how to create this zoomorphic letter

Both days will be recorded, so if you cannot make it in person to one or both days, then you can have access to the recordings.

By the end of the weekend you will have completed a page that features calligraphy and an illuminated versal in the Insular style.

Below is a list of materials that you will need for the course:

• 1 x A4 sheet of hot pressed (smooth) watercolour paper (size 210 x 297mm)
• 30cm ruler with a bevel edge
• pencil (regular with a sharpener or mechanical)
• eraser (clean white eraser and a putty eraser or kneadable eraser)
• calligraphy pen with a broad edged nib of 2mm
• a palette or inkstone for calligraphy & palette or china plate for illumination
• a pipette (for water)
• paper towel
• water jar
• practice paper for calligraphy
• brush for mixing ink or ink stick
• watercolour brushes sizes 00 & 0/1
• Black or brown gouache or ink stick for calligraphy
• Dark blue gouache (Prussian blue or cobalt blue)
• Purple gouache 
• Bright green gouache
• Warm yellow gouache
• bright red gouache
• white gouache
• For black outlines you can choose either a fine permanent marker, a pointed nib, a 000 brush or technical pens (size 0,2 & 0,5)
