Against Erasure: Palestinian Wedding Music
Panel & Live DJ Set
A fundraiser evening of sharing & remembering, dancing & celebrating
In Support of the Hanoon Foundation: Medical Training in Palestine
Join us for a panel discussion & a live DJ set exploring Palestinian wedding music.
With a special focus on Shafiq Kabha, “Godfather of Palestinian Folktronica,” the evening will discuss and celebrate Shafiq's legacy as experienced by Palestinians from across the geographical divide, and how it continues to shape Palestinian culture and musicians in Palestine & beyond.
Shafiq (1960-2013) wasn't any wedding singer/artist. An innovative force, he preserved & united a dismembered, geographically divided post-1948 Palestinian culture, while transforming its music for generations to come.
Blending genres and instruments: folklore & pop, drum & beat, mijwiz & keyboard, oud & bass, Shafiq, alongside fellow musicians from his village, formed a band in the 1970s & began performing at weddings. All self-taught. All new. All unique. With no professional training or institutional backing, but passion & talent.
Performing at over 240 weddings annually & reaching millions across Palestine, Shafiq became a musical, cultural & political institution. Connecting communities & inspiring generations.
The panel will be followed by a Q&A and DJ set.
Panellists:
Manal Massalha: Sociologist, Visual Ethnographer & Cultural Practitioner.
Aser El Saqqa: Creative Director, Festival Producer, Founder & Director of Arts Canteen.

The Hanoon Foundation, for nearly 30 years, has been at the forefront of building an independent, sustainable healthcare system in Palestine, including the training of medical doctors. In 1995, they helped set up the first medical school in Jerusalem.
Every penny we raise will go to supporting talented medical students, in Gaza and the West Bank, whose families are no longer able to cover their tuition fees.
