“Fermenting Community” is a community-led research project which aims to investigate increasing individual consumption of fermented foods and strengthening the sense of community through regular community fermentation sessions.
One of the aims of the project is to better understand how to minimize any barriers that prevent wider production and consumption of fermented food - be they cost, lack of knowledge/confidence, or access to (organic) vegetables for individuals.
The other aim of the project is to strengthen the sense of community at the Mandala Garden Project. Using overabundant seasonal vegetables and fruits, the ambition is to bring the community together to produce life-affirming food.
The research project is made possible by funding from the Williamson Trust and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The fermentation sessions are free to make them as accessible as possible. If the cost of the bus to get to Mandala Garden is a barrier to attending, let us know. (The local #10 bus will stop at the Wester Hardmuir Fruit Farm stop (10min walk), just ask the driver! As busses can run late, we've allowed for a leisurely 30mins to walk to Mandala Garden/have a cup of tea on arrival.)
The Mandala Garden Project is a registered charity (SC054552) - any donation, no matter how small, will support the activities of the Mandala Garden Project including volunteer morning community lunches, open days, general project costs.
