We are delighted to welcome Dr Rana Habibi (Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Urban Design, Academy of Built Environment, Breda University of Applied Sciences), who will give an online talk on:

'Modernity and Cultural Resilience in Tehran 1945-1978'

Talk Abstract:

Modernity and Cultural Resilience in Tehran 1945-1978 explores the metamorphosis of modernization in post-war Tehran. From the institutionalization of modern neighbourhoods to efforts for domestic cultural transformation, a fine line of resilience to the core of Iranian culture is evident, coexisting with or transforming imported modernity. This talk and the projects presented will uncover the lines of cultural resilience in the spatial structure, landscape, and social construction of modernity, highlighting how Iranian unique cultural identity has adapted and persisted through these changes.

Bio:

Rana Habibi is a senior lecturer and researcher in urban design at Breda University of Applied Science and a guest associate researcher at the University of Leuven. She holds a Ph.D. in Architecture (2015) and a Master of Urbanism and Strategic Planning (2011) from KU Leuven, and a postgraduate degree in European Urbanism (2010) from Università Iuav di Venezia. Her research focuses on inclusive urbanism, climate change, and global south urban modern history. She is involved in EU-funded projects like InclusiveCity, KreativEU, and Greengage. Rana is the guest editor of "Inclusive City" in Cities Journal and has over 30 published works. She coordinates Studio-Design in Amsterdam and several courses at Breda University.
