Suspensions & Transitions: Fluidity in the Air

Doors open: 11:00Am
Level: intermediate to advanced

Join us for a focused and dynamic 1-day workshop designed for practitioners who want to expand their suspension vocabulary and refine the art of moving gracefully through the air. Together, we will explore how to build clean, reliable suspensions from fundamental ties and how to transition between shapes with confidence, precision, and aesthetic intention.

Over the course of the workshop, we will work with:
✨ Building stable suspension structures from basic ties
✨ Creating elegant shapes in the air
✨ Transitioning between positions in suspension
✨ Technical guidance, safety education, and partner communication

Our approach emphasises both solid rigging and body-aware bottoming. Riggers will focus on constructing reliable suspensions so their partners can truly feel supported, secure, and held. Bottoms will be invited to develop deeper somatic awareness.

This workshop is suitable for you if:
Riggers:

  • are confident with basic knots and fundamental harnesses
  • can tie a solid gote in your preferred style
  • have experience working with semi-suspensions
  • can manage uplines safely and responsibly

Bottoms:

  • enjoy being in suspension
  • experience with semi-suspensions
  • can clearly identify and communicate nerve vs. circulation sensations

Together as a pair:

You should already have a working partnership and a shared understanding of communication, risk-awareness, and consent.

We will provide a supportive learning environment where technique, creativity, and safety come together—ideal for those who want to develop cleaner, smoother transitions and more expressive work in the air.

Join us and elevate your Shibari practice into new, fluid dimensions.

About the teacher:
Saara Kantanen is a Finnish artist, performer, and shibari and kinbaku teacher. Living in the countryside with her family and animals, she embodies the spirit of a modern-day viking woman. She co-owns Kakumei Kan, a kinbaku studio in the heart of Helsinki.

Shibari is both Saara’s passion and profession. She teaches couples, offers private sessions, and performs in Finland and abroad. Her style draws inspiration from Naka Sensei and Riccardo Wildties, focusing on emotional connection over complex patterns.

In her sessions, Saara creates a space where trust, vulnerability, and feeling take center stage. As both rigger and model, she brings empathy and intensity to every tie, often blending ritualistic and BDSM elements. Her workshops emphasize fundamentals, safe suspensions, and authentic connection through rope.
