Step into the evocative space between floor and air in this workshop dedicated to the art of partial suspension. Far more than a transitional stage on the way to full suspension, partials are a rich landscape of sensation, connection, and emotional depth, a complete world of their own.
Across this four lessons, we’ll explore:
Harnesses for Partial Suspension
Learn the principles behind creating harnesses that are sustainable for load-bearing in partial and full suspension. We’ll focus on understanding structure, balance, and comfort. The emphasis is on why certain choices matter.
We’ll learn how to attach uplines to harnesses, choosing appropriate points of connection, and how to think about load distribution.
Locking Off & Managing Lines Safely
You’ll become familiar with the concepts behind locking off and managing suspension lines in ways that support stability, fluidity, and scene control—always within safe, collaborative boundaries.
Between Earth and Air
Partial suspension thrives in the threshold. Here, intensity can rise in subtle waves, sensuality can sharpen, and emotional arcs can unfold with nuance. Through guided exercises and partnered exploration, you’ll learn how to:
- cultivate intention
- navigate shifting sensations
- co-create emotional journeys
- deepen the dialogue between rigger and partner
Who Is This For
This workshop is ideal for people ready to broaden their Shibari practice into partials—whether your goal is to enrich your floor play with new expressive possibilities or to develop a profound appreciation for the unique power of being neither fully grounded nor fully airborne. We celebrate partial suspension as a complete and captivating practice in its own right.
What to Expect
Expect focused study, embodied learning, respectful collaboration, and a supportive environment where curiosity and care guide every step. Both riggers and partners will leave with a deeper understanding of technique, communication, and the emotional artistry that makes partial suspension so compelling.
Step into the threshold where gravity shifts and sensation deepens. In this weekend intensive on partial suspension, you’ll learn the fundamentals of sustainable harnesses and line management, then dive into the potent emotional and sensual terrain unique to being neither grounded nor fully airborne. Partial suspension isn’t preparation—it’s its own art. Come explore the beauty of this in-between world.
Prerequisites:
- Solid, consistent experience with basic rope handling
Participants should already feel comfortable with foundational skills such as maintaining even tension, managing rope flow, and tying & untying with awareness and intention.
- Ability to tie sustainable Single Column Ties and Double Column Ties
Not a specific style, but a reliable, familiar single-column and double column that you can execute smoothly every time.
- Familiarity with at least one chest or upper-body harness and lower-body harness
Again, style-agnostic—just a harness you regularly use, understand the structure of, and can tie without guidance.
- Basic understanding of negotiation, consent, and risk-aware play
Since we’ll be exploring emotional and sensual intensity as well as physical load-bearing, participants should already practice clear communication and informed consent.
- No previous suspension experience required - just the ability to communicate clearly and timely and understanding the risks as well as the signs of nerve impingement.
- Ideally you have completed a foundational course I at a Shibari Studios under professional guidance
