Gravity Is The Enemy, My Friend- Predicament Play

We play with bodies and rope, let’s add to the mixture and play with elevation and gravity. Adding even one upline offers profound possibilities to push and pull, enhance tension and begin the ascent from the floor play into the air. Predicaments are ultimately psychological edgeplay. The work of creating a “good” predicament is to place a person between conflicting options, neither of which offer a solution to the struggle. “Stuck between a rock and a hard place” as we say. As we slowly chisel away at someone’s sense of security and balance, we work with tension and gravity to torment the mind and the body.

We will be building sustainable harnesses for upper and lower body and work through a variety of exercises focusing on the formation and use of secure uplines to build partial suspensions. Rather than seeing this as a step towards suspension, we will be exploring the space in between ground and air.

  • Introduction to Uplines: Multiple hitching styles, securing to bamboo, tying off on the way up, multiple lock off styles.
  • Body handling techniques employing up-lines
  • Anatomical considerations, nerve pathways and impingement, circulation impairment, breath restriction and risk assessment of injury

Rigger prerequisites: experience following patterns and building harnesses, proficient upline building and management, confident in rope communication skills, knowledge of safety and risk in rope.

Bottom prerequisites: confident in-rope communication skills, knowledge of safety and risk in rope, confident ability to monitor and communicate signs of nerve compression.
