Firstly the bad news. It appears that we are aiming for third time lucky with our scheduled teller Olivia Armstrong. Sadly, she has the lurgy and needs to wrap up and rest.

Secondly for the great news, the silver lining, the gift at the bottom of Pandora's box. Stepping up to the plate is the wonderful Maria Credali with her captivating set 'Letters Through Time'. This is an inspiring story that was initially commissioned by FATE (Festival at the Edge),  last year.

Simon Evans was an ordinary man with an extraordinary story. An Arts Council England funded commission for Festival at the Edge.

Like many thousands of others, Simon Evans was quite literally a broken man, in more ways than one, after his terrible ordeal in the trenches. He was badly wounded both physically and mentally. But this ordinary postman was a man of optimism and drive. His story is one of hope. We walk with Simon along the path his life takes from the busy, noisy post war city of Birkenhead to the quiet restorative calm of the countryside and we witness the very personal struggle of a man coming to terms with life after conflict.

The story of Simon's life is woven together with traditional tales from all over the world - and their messages of hope and perseverance are just as relevant for audiences today as they ever were. Perhaps we need them even more.

Taffy Thomas MBE, Storytelling Laureate said of the piece “Joyous, beautiful, inspiring and poetic.”

We are currently sold out on the door, but we have lots of capacity online as we stream the evening in high quality.

POSTPONED- Landscape & Longing - folktales and folklore from Northern Ireland

We are delighted to announce that our guest in May is Olivia Armstrong who was due to be with us last September. Better late than never they say, though we prefer to say 'better than ever'. Olivia  is an Irish performance storyteller, who tells stories of wonder and magic. She has a rich knowledge of Irish and British folklore and seasonal customs, along with a profound love for both the natural and supernatural worlds.

Join us at the Imperial Room in Matlock or online as Olivia tells stories of Landscape and Longing, stories that straddle the borders between this world and the world beyond, stories where nothing is quite what it seems and the unexpected lies behind every hedge or beyond the distant hills. Take a wander with the ghosts and henwives through the dark folktales of hedges and hills and along the mysterious byways of the Irish borders between this world and the Otherworld.

On our wanderings last summer we encountered Olivia at Festival At The Edge (FATE) as she beguiled and bewitched audiences who hung on her every word. We are delighted to host her here in Matlock for the first time and suggest you book nice and early for this one. Our wonderful house band, Cage of Crows, will be with us providing sumptuous tunes and beautiful melodies.

We will be live and in the room and also streaming via Zoom. We're loving our international reach and enjoy the 'shout outs' to our global audience. So, if you're willing and able, schmooze on down to the Imperial Rooms in Matlock and join us live. If you're elsewhere in the world or can't join us live for whatever reason then sit back with a beverage of your choice, curl up on the settee and click on the link.

We are delighted to tell you that soup, cakes, teas coffees etc will be available from our kitchen once more. So now you can leave all your snacks at home. You are still most welcome to bring a bottle of something with you. If you're watching online you are responsible for your own pension, soft furnishings and choice of crisps.

We urge you to book in advance as we cannot guarantee there will be tickets available on the door. We have sold out in previous months.

We at Matlock Storytelling Cafe are embracing our quest; to bring top quality performances to adult audiences.

Grab a ticket, turn off your phone and join us on a journey. Online ticket sales will close at 7pm on the night.
