ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Leslie Anderson (she/her)
In 2002 my husband Dan Nygaard and I left our lives in high tech and bought a farm in Sedgwick. Maine. I wanted to paint; he wanted to be a flower farmer. All these years later we are still married, still painting, and still farming.
After three Boston startups it was time for something new. Rather than attend art school, I found the best painting teachers I could and inhaled what they had to offer; they include Louise Bourne, Philip Frey, Jon Imber, Tina Ingraham, and Colin Page.
My subject is summer on the Blue Hill Peninsula where I paint en plein air in oils and watercolors. In my Portland winter studio at Mayo Street Arts, I work from summer sketches to capture the essence of a Downeast summer; I also paint portraits and still life to stay grounded in working from direct observation.
Josie Colt (she/they)
Josie is a Portland-based artist and community organizer with a love for visual storytelling. Making art is an important therapeutic process in Josie’s life, with mediums ranging from comics and animation to figure drawing, portrait painting, sculpture, and illustration. She loves to share that process with others and does so in spaces such as Congress Square Park, facilitating coloring and coffee events, and with the Portland Drawing Group, providing accessible figure drawing to Portland’s arts community. This summer, Josie also participated as a teacher assistant at Mayo Street’s R.A.D. program, an experience that filled her cup with awesome kids and fellow community members.
Quinn Evans (she/her)
Based in Yarmouth, ME, and operating from her studio at Mayo Street Arts in Portland, Quinn Evans (she/her) is an oil painter whose artistic expression delves into the personal experiences of her generation. Her work grapples with a world that attempts to sever the connections between mind and body, individual and community, and humans and the environment. Often creating scenes imbued with a darker, ethereal quality, she strives to immerse her audience in an experience that transcends the familiar, inviting exploration into the mysteries of both our inner selves and the surrounding world. Primarily focusing on figurative art, Evans endeavors to reassess and challenge the established dynamic between artist and muse, forging genuine connections with her models and faithfully portraying individuals in an authentic manner.
Originally from Lancaster, PA, Evans (b. 1998) pursued her studies at Susquehanna University for three years before transferring to Franklin and Marshall College, where she completed her B.A. in Studio Art in 2021. She has exhibited her work extensively along the East Coast and has had several paintings acquired by institutions such as Franklin & Marshall College, Susquehanna University, and Kennesaw State University. Recently, Evans participated in the "Bodies of Work" exhibition, hosted by the UMVA at the Portland Media Center, where she was one of four featured artists. She also actively engages with the community at Mayo Street Arts by teaching after-school programs and participating in various events.
Lovers Fight Tonight (he/him, they/them, she/her)
Lovers Fight Tonight was founded by multimedia artist Hi Tiger. Their latest work integrates apparel, visual art, and live performance inspired by a fictional small-town bad girl and the redneck outlaws she hangs out with. Hi Tiger is currently touring music from their EP. Fags and English Majors and exhibiting samples from the 23/24 Lovers Fight Tonight apparel collection. Expect deconstructed house beats, brooding vocals, freshly dropped one-of-a-kind bags, hoodies, and tees.
Maggie Muth (she/they)
Stitcher, painter, printmaker, sometime puppeteer - general overall maker of fun things. I love to teach, and make stuff with other makers. I have lived and taught in interesting places in the world. I love my family and my dog. A bunch of people have actually paid money to have my work in their homes. You can see my work on Instagram @maggiemuth. Also chats with other makers @grilledcheese_and_frenchfries.
Elliot Nye (they/he)
Elliot is a Portland-based artist, performer, and, in no uncertain terms, "puppet guy" who organizes collaboratively generated performances that generally feature detailed miniature sets and puppets and inventive live video elements. These featured pieces were created as a part of a puppet show entitled "Still Life By Puppet", wherein a puppet with a camera for a head (his POV streamed live) paints a still life of an anthropomorphic golden retriever puppy. Through performance and rehearsal, we generated some 30-odd paintings. This show, and the art it generated, was created in collaboration with Caroline James (they/them) and Simi Kunin (they/them).
Kathryn Price (she/her)
Kathryn Price is a photographer and pianist who also had the opportunity to curate The Unfinished Art Project at Mayo Street Arts last year. While she is looking to continue to pursue similar projects in the future, her work also considers the fleeting and futile nature of the glance, which ultimately shapes her relationship with the world. This collection of images reflects on the depth and beauty of moments she feels safe at night.
