HINTERLANDS
Fri Apr 12, 2024 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Mayo Street Arts, 04101
Description
HINTERLANDS is an accordion and violin duo that combines song craft with improvisation. Between new music and folk trance, the performances of violinist Ben Russell and accordionist Matt Schreiber conjure a musical world where boundaries blur and new resonance is born. Russell's drone-heavy violin stylings call upon Western classical, North Indian, and Appalachian influences, and intermix with Schreiber's virtuosic Balkan accordion bursts.
Coupled with the raw intensity of shape-note singing in their original vocals the duo evokes wild mountainous and oceanic soundscapes in varied time signatures and bold improvisations.
HINTERLANDS are known for how well they listen to each other - and how they conjure such focused listening out of their audiences. Both inviting and explosive, Hinterlands transports audiences through a prism of color, light, and sound.
Friday, April 12, 7:00 PM (doors 6:30 PM), 75-minutes with an intermission
Tickets are available for $15 in advance, $18 at the door, and $22 for preferred seating (pay-what-you-can available)
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Ben Russell (violin) and Matt Schreiber (accordion) have been performing together for fifteen years in an evolving conversation between musical worlds. Seamlessly weaving together threads of vernacular music, improvisation, and songcraft, the duo draws from disparate influences to create a musical fabric that is entirely their own. Sometimes fiery, sometimes melancholy, Hinterlands leaves listeners feeling that they have journeyed through landscapes of shapes and indescribable textures.
Outside of the duo, Ben has performed with Kronos Quartet, Max Richter, Björk, Sufjan Stevens, The National, and Johann Johannson. Matt has studied and performed Romani and Balkan music for almost two decades and is one of a handful of American accordionists helping the instrument move beyond a state of perpetual comeback.
