Description
Tophat Productions' Sunset Boulevard
After premiering back in 2021, Tophat Productions is bringing back its one-man miniature stage production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash hit musical, Sunset Boulevard back to Mayo Street Arts. The musical - which is currently having a revival on Broadway - is based on the famous 1950 film noir directed by Billy Wilder, which takes a harsh look at the world of Hollywood and the movie industry. It tells the story of a struggling screenwriter, Joe Gillis, who ends up being hired to edit a script written by an old actress from the silent film era, Norma Desmond who dreams of returning back to the screen. What starts out as a working relationship becomes a more entangled and dangerous one, with tragic consequences.
Andrew Lloyd Webber gives this story a powerful and haunting score including great hits such as "With One Look", "As If We Never Said Goodbye", "The Greatest Star of All", "The Perfect Year", "This Time Next Year", "Too Much In Love To Care" and of course, the title song, "Sunset Boulevard". So, roll out the red carpet, get ready for your closeup and see this musical hit as you have never seen it before!
For this performance, Top Hat Productions and MSA encourages all guest to dress for the occasion! So pull out your glad rags cause Hollywood is coming to Portland on the small stage!
David Worobec is Portland, Maine's premier expert and practitioner of the art of miniature theater. Highly popular in the late-18th and 19th centuries, miniature theater delivers visually-stunning renditions of popular stage shows on a micro scale. Shows take place within the confines of a tiny stage, just a couple of feet tall, complete with curtains, sophisticated lighting, and impeccably detailed props and stage sets. Everything, including dialogue, stage movements, and musical numbers are performed live, in real time. The result: a visual and auditory marvel that is well worth an evening out.
*Warning: This show contains adult language and themes including mental illness, suicide and murder.
