Mayo Street Arts celebrates the joy and gusto of Eastern European folk music with an evening of three different styles of accordion performance by local musicians from three countries:
- Liudmyla Iurchenko (Ukrainian) is a Ukrainian singer, songwriter, and poet who began performing on stage, radio, and television in early childhood. A self-taught musician and award-winning artist, she earned recognition through major competitions across the former Soviet Union and won first place at the All-Ukrainian Bard Song Festival with her original song, “Ukrainochka.” Since coming to the United States, she has continued sharing her music and cultural artistry through community performances.
Ylli Brekofca (Albanian) collected nearly 400 traditional folk songs in his home country of Albania. The folklorist, accordionist, and singer left Albania in 2016 to come to the U.S., leaving behind his accordion in addition to anything else that would not fit in a pair of small suitcases. In Portland, Brekofca met Orson Horchler, a contractor and musician who rallied his community to gift Brekofca with a new accordion. The pair are now friends and founding members of Bondeko, a Portland-based band that transcends language barriers to create a unique blend of musical styles.
Nancy 3. Hoffman (Ashkenazi) is a classically trained pianist and works nationally as a music theater director. Hoffman Is a founding member of The Casco Bay Tummlers Klezmer Band, playing Eastern European Jewish folk music for over 30 years. She also leads The Maine Squeeze accordion ensemble, playing international folk music. Her solo work includes international cabaret and her one-woman rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta The Mikado. Hoffman is also director and curator of the world’s only Umbrella Cover Museum on Peaks Island.
This performance is made possible by the Traditional Arts Network (TAN), a consortium of traditional artists, ensembles, and community organizations in Maine that is facilitated by Mayo Street Arts and Cultural Resources. TAN supports the work of traditional artists preserving a cultural heritage from all countries of origin and indigenous communities.
