Lindsey Bourassa Flamenco feat. Bárbara Martínez, Andreas Arnold & Mario Rincon
Multiple dates and times
Mayo Street Arts, 04101
Description
Local flamenco dancer Lindsey Bourassa returns with three of the most sought-after flamenco artists in the US—flamenco singer Bárbara Martínez, flamenco guitarist Andreas Arnold, and flamenco percussionist and singer Mario Rincon—for two performances that highlight the interconnection between flamenco dance, song, and guitar through traditional styles such as Livianas, Tarantos, Sevillanas, and Bulerías. Having collaborated regularly, these four artists uphold and honor the power of flamenco's storytelling ability through an emotive call and response of melodies, rhythms and movements.
ARTIST BIOS
Lindsey Bourassa
Based in Portland, Maine, Lindsey Bourassa is a flamenco dancer, choreographer, and teacher with a Master of Flamencology Degree from Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain) and a Certificate of Professionalization in Flamenco Arts from El Centro de Arte y Flamenco de Sevilla (Seville, Spain). She has performed and taught in both Spain and the United States and currently teaches Flamenco as part of the Bates College Dance Department in Lewiston, Maine.
Lindsey performs traditional flamenco with national and international flamenco artists, as well as her own original contemporary-flamenco works that illustrate multimedia, multi-genre storytelling, often woven together with her own creative prose.
Bárbara Martínez
For more than 20 years, Bárbara has worked as a dancer and singer with many flamenco dance companies in the U.S., also dancing in Carmen and La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera, where she sang as a child. Bárbara has appeared in the documentary “Sobre Las Olas – A Story of Flamenco in the U.S.” by Carolina Loyola-Garcia and the photography exhibit “100 Years of Flamenco in New York” by NY Performing Arts Library and Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo.
Bárbara performs regularly in NYC with Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo, Danza España, Xianis Barrera Flamenco, A Palo Seco Flamenco, Alegrías at La Nacional, Sol y Sombra Flamenco, and beyond New York with Pasión y Arte Flamenco, Lindsey Bourassa Flamenco, EntreFlamenco, Juanito Pascual, Flamenco Sepharad, New Andalucía and others.
Andreas Arnold
As an artist in a globalized world, Andreas Arnold expresses himself through a musical kaleidoscope that reflects the classical traditions of his homeland Germany, jazz from the US where he has been living for the last decade, and music from the Mediterranean, in particular the Spanish art form of flamenco. Through this unique fusion, Arnold proves that purity is not defined by any one culture or style but transpires when one finds his voice to express his personal experience in society, art, and life.
While living between New York City and Andalusia, Spain, Arnold has participated in numerous productions as an instrumentalist, composer, improviser, and producer, touring on five continents. On his new album Ojos Cerrados he was accompanied among others by Carles Benavent, legendary and longtime bass player of Paco de Lucia.
Mario Rincon
Mario is a musical polyglot inspired by a diverse array of traditions. As a child he gained formative instruction from his father—flamenco guitarist Reynaldo Rincon—and sang with the New York Boys Choir backing up Stevie Wonder and Al Green among others. Mario holds a BMus from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music, has studied bluegrass guitar with grammy-nominee Michael Daves and flamenco cante in Spain with Rocio Marquez. Today Mario sings professionally with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana and his father’s company, Romeria Flamenca. He also performs original music with his folk quartet, Steamboats.
