Join us for the opening reception on Friday, December 2 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Mayo Street Arts. There will be light snacks and libations!

The exhibit will be on view from December 2 through January 29. ABOUT THE ARTISTS

LESLIE ANDERSON and her husband left their lives in high-tech and bought a farm in Sedgwick, Maine in 2022. She wanted to paint; he wanted to be a flower farmer. Twenty years later, they are still married, still painting, and still farming.

After three IPOs from my Boston startups, it was time for something new. Rather than attend formal art school, she found the best independent instructors she could and inhaled what they had to offer beginning with watercolors, through acrylics, and finally on to oils. she learned from some of Maine’s best artists, including Louise Bourne, Philip Frey, Jon Imber, Tina Ingraham, and Colin Page.

Her subject is summer on the Blue Hill Peninsula where she paints en plein air in oils and watercolors. In her Portland winter studio at Mayo Street Arts, she works from summer sketches and cell phone snaps to capture moments that are the essence of a Downeast summer. She also paints still life to maintain her skills in working from direct observation. In addition to my painting practice, she curates a small gallery in the lobby of her Portland condominium building, which has honed her ability to select and present two-dimensional art and deepened her connection to the greater Maine art scene. leslieanderson.com

JULIA BAUGH is an interdisciplinary artist and educator working in ceramics, paper, plaster, metal, and found objects. Baugh holds a BS in Respiratory Care from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, an MA in Studio Art from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and an MFA in Studio Art from the Maine College of Art & Design, in Portland, Maine. She has taught at MECA&D and is the Ceramics Studio Manager/Instructor at Gorham Arts Alliance in Gorham, Maine. She is also a Teaching Associate in Mayo Street Arts Summer Youth Program in Portland, Maine. She has been the Assistant to the Chair of Ceramics and a Visiting Ceramics Instructor at The University of Arkansas at Little Rock. BROOKE BOLDUC, aka Buff Cat, (she/he/they) is a local Black creator specializing in illustration, painting, digital art and storytelling. Her goal as an artist is to share and create stories that give LGBTQ and BIPOC experiences visibility. CRYSTAL CAWLEY works with paper, textiles, collected objects, and re-purposed materials. Her work explores ideas of identity, time, memory, and loss, and draws on various traditional skills like embroidery and letterpress printing. She teaches in the Continuing Studies program at the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, and is an artist member of Portland's Pickwick Independent Press, a printmaking collective. She has shown her work around the US and in England, Greece, and Japan. Her work is in the collections of the Boston Public Library; Columbia University Library; The Library of Congress; Maine Women Writers Collection; MOMA/Franklin Furnace Artists’ Book Collection; the Smithsonian Institution Graphic Arts Collection at the National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.; and the Munakata Shiko Museum, Aomori, Japan, among others. She has received grants from the Maine Arts Commission, the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, and the Pollock Krasner Foundation. crystalcawley.com

QUINN EVANS seeks to express understandings of identity in her figurative work, especially as it relates to the younger generation who are faced with an increasingly uncertain world. By creating scenes both through collaboration and her own research, she uses painting as a medium to construct overarching narratives on this era by referencing various perspectives, including her own. Much of her work is a response to current political and social contexts, aiming to create constructive and restorative dialogues amongst her audiences.

Evans graduated summa cum laude from Franklin and Marshall College in 2021 with a B.A. in Studio Art. For the last decade, she has exhibited her work in various museum and non-profit art spaces. Recently, three of her paintings were acquired in the permanent collection of the Phillips Museum of Art. Her painting, “Isayah,” received First Place at the 2019 National Conference of Undergraduate Research Art Competition: Journeys Through the Civil Rights Movement: Then and Now and was acquired as part of Kennesaw State’s permanent collection. Two works were acquired by Susquehanna University, in the permanent collections of the Lore Degenstein Gallery and the Blough-Weis Library. ROBERTA MARCH was born and raised in Brazil. She started to pursue her art education later in life. Her first degree is in business administration and she received an MA in marketing, followed by a career in human resources within the field of banking. She attended the Hampstead School of Art in London, England, receiving a foundation diploma in Fine Arts. In 2015, she relocated to Houston, Texas where she studied for four years at The Glassell Studio School of Art. Afterward, she moved to Portland, Maine where she intends to make her home indefinitely.

Roberta March became an American citizen the same day she began her MFA program at Maine College of Art & Design, where she graduated in May 2021 and now works as a painter technician. She has a mosaic studio at Mayo Street Arts and her painting studio at home where she divided her time between her family and her art making. robertamarch.com / @roberta_march

MAGGIE MUTH has enjoyed being a studio artist at MSA since 2013. She is a community artist, stitcher, painter, and sometime puppeteer. Her community work includes #stitchHIVE – a free and open itinerant stitching space for all. She has conducted stitching workshops at the Maine College of Art (MECA), Maine Fiber Arts, Portland Public Schools, the American Visionary Art Museum, Mayo Street Arts, as well as overseas. Maggie has a BFA in Painting (with a minor in drawing) from MECA and a two-year certificate in Stitched Textiles from the Opus School of Textile Arts in the UK. KATHRYN PRICE was born and raised in North Yarmouth, Maine, and moved to Portland after attending Susquehanna University where she studied photography and art history. She is currently photographing products for Hannaford and working as an assistant preparator for the Portland Museum of Art. She is also a passionate pianist and songwriter in her free time. She enjoys both piano and photography because of their relationship with mindfulness and solitude. EAMON WHITE is a Portland, Maine-based artist and graduate of Merrimack College with a degree in digital design. Inspired and taught in painting by his grandmother since childhood, art has become a way for Eamon to encourage people to think about what is happening in our world and highlight social issues in a way aimed at inspiring unity and togetherness. Eamon’s art takes many forms including graphic design and customized hand-painted shoes and athletic footwear.
