The Maine Stage aims to be a centralized hub for Maine performance art. It will feature an interactive calendar of local events with ticket links embedded. In recent years the algorithm on Facebook and Instagram has made it more difficult to promote events effectively. A recent survey by the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) found nearly 1 in 10 Americans on social media suspect they’ve been shadowbanned. Shadowbanning results in a reduction of likes & the number of people seeing posts; it also leads to accounts not being recommended in the explore pages, so artists cannot be found organically by new followers. This survey revealed that those affected by shadowbanning were people who appeared to be living or working on the margins of society including Black creators, sex educators/workers, and those in adjacent fields - including burlesque; fat activists, queer individuals, and drag performers. The Maine Stage will create a platform that is unaffected by any algorithm which will allow more people to discover queer BIPOC performance artists & the events that they create. @the_maine_stage
