Description
The music of Bulgaria, a country long considered a cultural crossroads, is known for hauntingly expressive melodies, fascinating irregular rhythms and fiery dance tempos.
Bulgarika will present a concert of traditional Bulgarian songs and instrumentals. The evening features Donka Koleva (vocals), Nikolay Kolev (gadulka), Temelko Ivanov (kaval), Nikolay Kodzabashev (tambura), and Marin Chalumov (tupan).
The show will have a brief intermission when we will push the chairs back for collective Balkan dancing.

Tickets are available for $15 in advance, and $18 at the door, and $22 for preferred seating (pay-what-you-can-available).
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The internationally prominent singer, Donka Koleva is a native of the town of Rudozem Rodopa region of Thrace. After graduating from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka Bulgaria, Donka Koleva performed as a soloist on Bulgarian national Radio and TV. Since immigrating to the US, she has taught and performed widely across the United States.
Nikolay Kolev is from the Thracian Rose Valley Village of Karavelovo rich in gadulka traditions. Nikolay graduated from the National School of Arts in Shiroka Luka Bulgaria. Recognized as a world-class master of his art, he has performed and taught gadulka in the US for over 20 years.
A master kaval player, Temelko Ivanov graduated from the National School of Folklore Arts "Fhilip Kutev" in the town of Kotel and the Academy of Music in the town of Plovdiv. He is a soloist in the National Folk Ensemble "Thakia" and Bulgarian Radio and TV.
Nikolay Kodzabashev graduated from Konstantin Konstantinov High School with a music profile and the Academy of Music in Plovdiv. He is recognized as one of the best tambura players of his generation in Bulgaria. Currently, Nikolay performs as a soloist in the Sliven Folk Ensemble.
Marin Chalumov grew up in the town of Karlovo and began playing tupan professionally at the age of 15. Currently he is performing with the "Rosova Dolina" wedding band. Marin is known as a master tupan maker in Bulgaria.
