Volunteer to Protect Nova Scotia’s Hemlock Forests!
Eastern Hemlock forests in Nova Scotia face a serious threat from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). These unique and irreplaceable ecosystems need your help to thrive and endure for future generations.
Why Volunteer?
As a Hemlock Hero, you’ll join a passionate team dedicated to protecting and preserving Nova Scotia’s forests. Whether you’re ready to commit as a hands-on volunteer or contribute in other valuable ways, your involvement will have a lasting impact. Volunteering also offers a unique opportunity to travel to beautiful old-growth forests in remote areas, experiencing the natural beauty few others get to see.
How You Can Help
☀️Attend a Training Session
Learn to identify and treat HWA, equipping yourself with the skills to contribute directly to forest preservation. We offer five training sessions each year in May, June, July, August and September to fully prepare you as a Hemlock Hero.
🌲Volunteer for Treatment Days
Join us to treat hemlock trees using stem injection or basal bark techniques. Treatment days run from April to November, providing many opportunities to make a direct impact. Please note, full Hemlock Hero training is required to participate in these activities.
❄️Volunteer for Tree-Marking Days
Participate in tree-marking events—no prior Hemlock Hero training is required to join. Most tree-marking days take place between December and April, offering plenty of opportunities to get involved.
