Volunteer to Help Nova Scotia’s Hemlock Forests
Do you love being in the woods? Want to take action for Nova Scotia’s forests? Join our Hemlock Hero team and help protect some of the province’s old-growth Eastern Hemlocks stands.
These iconic trees are under serious threat from an invasive insect called Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). While we can’t save every tree, with your help, we can protect some of the most important stands and give these forests a fighting chance.
As a Hemlock Hero, you’ll be part of a dedicated team working to slow the spread of HWA and support hemlock conservation efforts across Nova Scotia. Volunteering gives you a chance to explore remote, old-growth forests—beautiful places that few people ever get to see. Whether you're looking to learn new skills or just spend more time in the woods, there's a place for you in this growing community of forest stewards.
How You Can Help:
☀️ Attend a Training Session
Learn how to identify HWA and treat Eastern Hemlock trees and become part of our volunteer team through Hemlock Hero Training. Offered three times each year in May and June, these sessions provide everything you need to get started safely and confidently in the field.
🌲 Join Treatment Days
Join our Hemlock Conservation crew in the woods as we treat infested hemlocks using stem injection and basal bark spray techniques. Treatment days run from May to November, with lots of chances to get involved.
Note: Hemlock Hero training is required to participate in treatment activities.
❄️ Help with Tree-Marking
If you'd rather start with a lighter commitment, join us for tree-marking days—a key step that helps prioritize trees for treatment. These events run from December to April and are open to everyone (no training required).
