About the Program
This three-day drama camp is designed to build confidence and cultivate performance skills in participants as they develop active listening, work together for a shared goal, face the challenge and reward of thinking on their feet, and embrace their own creative ideas and those of others.
Through exploring improvisation techniques, scene-setting, character development, voice, movement, stagecraft, and script work, students will experience the fun and satisfaction of working together to create short scenes that will be performed in front of their families and each other on the final day.
What to wear: students should wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes (no thongs or sandals)
What to bring: a drink/water bottle, packed lunch, and snacks for morning & afternoon break
What to expect: students will be given the opportunity to explore their gifts and interests across various of performance styles. Come prepared to try new skills, create new stories, and embrace your own creative ideas and those of others in the group!
Timetable - Days 1 & 2
Morning session
9:00am to 10:40am: Focus on improvisation games for team building, explore performance styles, and the importance of scene-setting; experience the challenge of ‘thinking on your feet’; and feel the comfort and joy of being supported by those around you.
Mid-morning session
11:00am to 12:40pm: Character and script work. Developing depth and context, understanding relationships, building connection, and finding truth in performance.
Afternoon session
1:30pm to 3:00pm: Devising, developing, refining, and rehearsing short scenes. What makes a good story? Where can you find inspiration? What character relationships and traits would audiences want to watch? What helps you and audiences to connect emotionally with character and story?
Timetable - Day 3
Morning session
9:00am to 10:40am: Continue developing onstage spontaneity through improvisation. Focus on further team building and to enrich performance styles, scene-setting, and confidence when ‘thinking on your feet’.
Mid-morning session
11:00am to 12:40pm: Finalise scripts, set and consolidate character choices in performance (using voice, movement, motivation, relationships, context). Rehearse and refine.
Afternoon session
1:30pm to 3:00pm: Final rehearsals in preparation for performance. Continue to use the improvisation skills of spontaneity and active listening to bring reality to performance, or to save a missed line. Explore and refine ways to bring depth to characters and interactions. Use voice, movement, and performance to build your scene.
Performance
3:00pm to 3:30pm: Arriving at normal pick-up time, families are invited to become the audience for the premiere performances of the newly devised pieces developed over the three-day drama camp.
