Routes to Roots Migration Mapping – come and map your South Asian heritage with us and explore Haringey’s timeline of South Asian migration to the borough!

Explore Haringey Council’s Timeline of South Asian history with us, and map your (or your family's) migration to the borough, the routes you’ve taken and your roots, to the borough. Delve into the archives, and share your unique stories onto a collective map. We will collage, draw, discuss and celebrate our heritage and collectively learn about the significance and impact South Asian migration has had on the borough. 

We welcome intergenerational conversations and would love to encourage all ages and voices to join us. Children (under your own care), young people and elders alike. The event is drop-in and free though please RSVP so we can accommodate numbers!

Facilitated by Mehfil Arts Team: Shirin Naveed and Naila Ali

Shirin Naveed is a multi-disciplinary artist, spatial designer, DJ and creative producer. Shirin’s interests lie in the intersections of architecture, public art, community engagement, migration, and sound. She seeks to explore the intricate relationships between communities and their environments, and how spaces shape identities. Through diverse mediums from craft and carpentry to photography, sound or 3D design she endeavours to explore these connections, employing methodologies like co-design, workshop facilitation, oral histories, and research to delve deeper into this complex interplay. Shirin has worked across the arts and built environment industries with roles at DSDHA, Beyond the Box, The Line Art Walk, IKON Gallery alongside freelancing across the creative industries and is a DJ and member of DAYTIMERS and Mehfil Arts. Shirin was a recipient of artist funding via UCL Trellis, and is an alumni of NotASchool, Theatrum Mundi’s PolyVocal Cities, Soho House Creative Mentor Network and is currently studying a Masters in Architecture at the RCA. Her most recent work was in co-designing the first dedicated South Asian space at Glastonbury – ARRIVALS. 

Naila Ali (she/her) is a mother, psychotherapist, writer, artist, a migrant at the of 19 months exploring identity, patriarchy, (ancestral) trauma, migration and displacement. Her @migrantwomenhistories project documents photographic memories and biographies of women who have migrated or been displaced with the aim of giving space to those who are overlooked or forgotten. She also aims to create spaces (both physical and mental/emotional) of connection, sharing, learning, nurturing, and more, through gathering in community. Naila works in private practice, is a conference speaker and workshop facilitator.
