Mersey Ortho ST3 Interview Course
The Mersey Ortho ST3 Interview course has been successfully running for many years. For the past 3 years we have had to change the format away from a face to face course, to a virtual one, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, as the National Selection Interviews are going to remain virtual for the foreseeable future, we are going to continue with our virtual course. This is to give you practice for the real interview in terms of conducting yourself at a virtual interview, and practising using the Microsoft Teams platform (as they do in the National Selection). This will be combined with the important practice and experience of having a full mock interview process, and observing 2 other candidates being interviewed, with constructive feedback.
We will be running the Course on Thursday 15th February 2024 via Teams.
As it stands, we are running it as an afternoon session, but we will encourage you to book the whole day as study leave in advance, as depending on demand, we may open up to having the full day. Either way, the free half day could be useful prep time, or a consolidation personal study session.
You will rotate through 3 full interviews in the same format as the real thin. You do this in groups of 3, where you will be the interviewee for 1 set and observe in 2, and help to provide feedback.
During your mock interview you will go through:
- A portfolio station: Looking at and analysing your self assessment scores.
- A handover station: prioritising a trauma list / oncall / handover scenario.
- A clinical station: with with a clinical scenario, and likely an anatomy or approaches element.
In addition to this, there will also be:
- A talk from recently successful ST3s who went through the virtual selection process in 2022 and 23.
- Feedback and tips and tricks from Consultants who have years of experience at National Selection and who interviewed virtually in 2022 and 23.
The course is run primarily for Mersey trainees but we have extended this to the whole Northwest Deanery. However, as the course has been running for so long we get, and will accept, applications from all over the country so get your applications in fast as currently we have only 30 places available.
Cost is £50 per candidate. All of the funds are reinvested in the course, with no profits made by the organising faculty.
This course is best suited to CT2 or equivalent trainees who intend to apply for T+O National Selection now for the Spring 2024 interviews. We would welcome CT1s if they wish to attend for experience, but be warned the level of the course will be pitched at candidates imminently approaching their interviews. F2s, your time will come!
Faculty are all consultants who engage with the national selection process, plus some recently successful ST3 and 4s to give you their take on the process.
If you have any questions prior to the course, please get in touch.

Nearer the time we’ll send you links for the day and allocate your session if we extend to all day, otherwise it will be in the PM. We will also then ask you to send a copy of your self-assessment forms that are part of your application, which we will then use for the portfolio station. We allocate the groups based on multiple factors, and feel it is important that you are not in a group with your friends or close colleagues, as this can potentially detract from the experience.
Have a great festive period and we’ll contact you again in January. Scan the QR code to book.
Neal and David.
