We are delighted to announce our latest exhibition, Black & White, featuring the outstanding new work from Wissam Shawkat_

Wissam Shawkat is an award-winning calligraphy artist and designer, specialised in letter forms, Born in 1974 in Basra (Iraq), he was first introduced to Arabic calligraphy at the age of 10 by his primary school teacher Muhammad Ridha Suhail_

Shawkat is largely self-taught in the rigorous medium, attaining mastery through book research and visits to various museum and library collections throughout the region_ He has received numerous prizes for his calligraphy and has participated as both an artist and committee member at multiple editions of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial and the Dubai International Calligraphy Exhibition_

“Black & White is an exhibition of works selected from across my oeuvre – from Classical pieces and Al-Wissam Script to the most contemporary Calligraforms – united by an absence of color. By removing this visual distraction, the fundamental elements of the works are brought to the fore; form, shape, and composition reveal themselves without diversion. The binary nature of positive and negative spaces, through their minimalist simplicity, offer the viewer a more accessible study of proportion, depth, weight, and style_” – Wissam Shawkat
