Fresh Ink: How to Write Compelling Applications

Sat 18 Jul 2026 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM 1-2 Pier Street, HU1 1TU

A workshop with Lydia Marchant and Matthew May

Playwrights spend their lives honing a unique voice for the page, but too often lose it when it comes to writing about themselves in applications, funding bids or when communicating their ideas.

At Middle Child we often see creativity lost under formal language and neutral phrasing. This practical workshop helps you bring your authentic voice into every part of your professional life.

You'll explore how to write applications, bios and pitches that sound like you. Discover how the same creativity that powers your plays can also open doors to move your career forward.

About Lydia and Matthew

Lydia Marchant is a writer for stage, screen and audio, whose credits include Mumsy at Hull Truck Theatre, Casualty and EastEnders for television, and the podcast British Scandal.

Matthew May is Middle Child’s literary manager, responsible for identifying and working with writers across Middle Child’s programme.
