A Middle Child Short

Stuck together in the broken lift of their dilapidated tower block, life-long resident Dawn and newly arrived Cal strike up an unlikely friendship.

While walking together to the 15th floor, Dawn realises Cal is not everything he seems and she is forced to fight for her future and the place she calls home.

Legoland asks what happens when things are deliberately broken for political gain, who suffers and when it’s time to walk away. 

Kelly Jones

Kelly Jones is a working-class lesbian playwright from East London. Her play My Mother’s Funeral: The Show completed a sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe, was the recipient of The Lustrum award and a Scotsman Fringe First for Outstanding New Writing. In January 2025 it transferred to The Yard Theatre London and the Soho Playhouse New York. 

She is also writer in residence with SISTER Productions and has work in development with Ardent Theatre, Hattrick Productions and NT Connections and BBC Radio 4. 

Middle Child Shorts

Middle Child Shorts is a brand-new series of 30-minute plays by Zia Ahmed, Tom Wells, Lydia Marchant and Kelly Jones. 

Every week we present a new play with two actors, one set and no interval. Just brilliant storytelling in the time it takes to drink a coffee, eat your lunch or enjoy a quick pint after work. 

Inspired by the creativity and energy of Fresh Ink: Hull Playwriting Festival, these bite-sized productions are designed to be affordable, welcoming and easy to fit into your day. 

Whether you're a regular theatregoer or trying live theatre for the first time, Middle Child Shorts will showcase brilliant new writing in the heart of Hull.

Relaxed Performance

The 10.00am performance on Sunday 4 October is a relaxed performance. The house lights will be up and noise and movement from the audience is welcome.
