Sunset Boulevard (1950)

One of the best American movies of the 20th century, Sunset Boulevard established Billy Wilder as one of the greatest directors in history. The film follows an ageing and deranged silent-screen actor who gets a second shot at fame when a screenwriter agrees to write a script for her. 

The film marked a significant turning point in the way that Hollywood was perceived by those outside the industry, detailing an unglamorous and immoral underbelly that studios had historically gone to great lengths to conceal. Gloria Swanson's performance has been hailed as one of the greatest in movie history, and the film itself was nominated for several Oscars.
