Join us for a special conversation around stateless organising and radical education with Zikri Rahman, author of ‘Eyes on Sabah: Borneo Komrad in Movement’, Ainina Sofia, co-founder of Borneo Komrad’s Sekolah Alternatif Semporna, and Joon-Lynn Goh, co-founding director of Migrants in Culture.

Borneo Komrad is a youth-led network that is providing alternative education to stateless children in Sabah, Malaysia, and building a stateless organising movement. ‘Eyes on Borneo’ is a 10 year record of oral history weaving activists and stateless citizens across generations and environments. The book explores Borneo Komrad’s pedagogical practices, organisational dynamics, and collective struggle to transcend all meanings and obstacles of nation state borders.

We will be selling limited copies of the book alongside crafts made by Borneo Komrad students. All tickets and purchases go towards supporting the work of Borneo Komrad.

In conversation:

Zikri Rahman is a cultural worker, writer and programme coordinator of Pusat Sejarah Rakyat (@sejarahdaribawah) and co-organises Under The Banana Tree (@underbananatreeaechives), a Southeast Asia-based network of independent archival and cultural initiatives.

Ainina Sofia (@aininasofia) is a frontline practitioner in supported employment, neurodiversity and occupational psychology. In 2017, as a student activist in Malaysia, she co-started Sekolah Alternatif Semporna Borneo Komrad, an alternative school for Bajau Laut communities in Sabah. Based in London, she now organises with ESEA Sisters in Nature and ILPS Britain.

Joon-Lynn Goh (@joonlynngoh) is cultural organiser, strategist and co-founding director of Migrants in Culture CIC. She has been a Thirty Percy Changemaker, GLA Civic Futures Fellow and UNHCR Champion of the Year.

This talk is delivered by Migrants in Culture in partnership with Borneo Komrad and Matahari Books with outreach support from ESEA sisters in nature, Southeast East Asian Centre (SEEAC) and International League of Peoples' Struggle, Britain.
