Mildmay Club Hackney History Festival Talk & Tour
Thu 8 May 2025 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM BST
Members Bar, The Mildmay Club, N169PR
Description
The Mildmay Club (formerly the Mildmay Radical Club) has overlooked Newington Green since it was built 125 years ago. At this event there will be two short talks – one from Pete Brown, author of 'Clubland: How the Working Men’s Club Shaped Britain' on the history of working men’s clubs and the Mildmay’s place in that history, and another on the history of the building. These will be followed by a tour around the Grade II Listed building, a presentation of historic records, pictures, and artefacts, and opportunity to ask questions.
You will learn about the architecture, design and successive refurbishments of the building, the political, educational, cultural and sporting activities that continue to be fostered here, celebrities who have performed here, and club members’ participation in two world wars. Space will be available for up to 40 people.
The Club will be open at 18:30pm for a 7pm event start time.
Suggested donation: £5 (£2 concessions)
