Peace and Productivity: Building Focus Areas | Workshop - Virtual

Wed Sep 16, 2026 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM PDT Online, Google Meet

There is always something more urgent demanding our attention: an email to answer, a deadline to hit, a message to return. And so the things that feel most meaningful keep getting quietly deferred. This is the experience of so many, whether you are a student, a faculty member, a staff member, or an alumnus navigating your full career. Days full of effort, and yet a persistent sense that your deepest priorities are not getting the attention they deserve.

This is not a failure of discipline. It is what happens when urgency consistently crowds out importance, and it has a practice-based solution.

In this workshop, we explore Focus Areas, a quarterly practice and a living compass for returning to what matters most and finding peace in the direction of your work and life. Drawing on the foundational distinction between what is urgent and what is important, we examine how work and life pulls us toward the former at the expense of the latter, and we build a personal structure for changing that pattern, with intention and care.

We will move through four components: a grounding meditation to arrive fully, a conceptual exploration of the urgency trap, a guided Focus Areas exercise moving through Vision, Mission, Priorities, and Pathways, and a closing practice for bringing this into your weekly rhythm so it stays alive rather than aspirational.

This workshop offers an opportunity to gain:

  • A completed set of personal Focus Areas (Vision, Mission, Priorities, and Pathways) oriented toward the next three months of your life and work
  • A clearer sense of the difference between what is urgent and what is genuinely important to you
  • A simple weekly practice for returning to your priorities so they stay present and actionable
  • A compassionate framework for navigating competing demands without losing sight of your deeper direction

Workshop Agenda:

Settling and Arriving We begin with a brief guided meditation to turn attention inward and into what Focus Areas asks of us: the capacity to pause, notice, and choose.

Important vs. Urgent We examine how the things that are deeply important but not immediately pressing keep getting quietly displaced, and why a repeating quarterly practice of clarification is more sustainable and more humane than trying to plan a year in advance.

Building Your Focus Areas Guided by a values inventory and a structured four-part framework, we'll move through the Focus Areas exercise: identifying a Vision, articulating a Mission, naming three to five Priorities for the next 90 days, and mapping the Pathways that will move each priority forward. This is a living practice to revisit and revise every three months.

Returning to What Matters We close by exploring how to integrate Focus Areas into a weekly practice so your priorities remain a guide through inevitable shifts and pressures, and we practice the art of returning, with peace and gentleness, when the weeks get away from you.
