Nestled
in the heart of Mid-Wales, El Sueño Existe festival is inspired by the
life, music and example of Victor Jara. This visionary musician and
theatre director was part of the New Song movement in Salvador Allende’s
Chile.
Borrowing from that political vision, the festival is a forum for cultural expression, social justice and human rights. Through music, dance, theatre, poetry and political debate it casts a vibrant light on the work of progressive political and environmental movements throughout Latin America and closer to home.
2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile which destroyed the extraordinary achievements of the progressive government of Salvador Allende, (1970 – 73) murdered Victor Jara, and imprisoned, tortured and murdered thousands of others, sending further thousands into forced exile, many to Britain. The festival will commemorate and celebrate not only Victor Jara, Pablo Neruda and many others, but also the massive contribution made by those Chilean exiles who escaped to safety here after the coup.
A moving and inspiring weekend, the festival programme has been developed with input from Chilean exiles and 2nd generation Chilean activists in the UK, especially those involved in “Chile 50 Years UK” and Alborada films.
The 2023 event is a mini-festival, which means that it is a smaller and shorter event than the full festival (next one 2024).
