In Search of the Pearly Moon of Eid (Online talk + in-person gathering)

Join members of the Moonsighters Academy and New Crescent Society

An online panel discussion on when to celebrate Ramadan and Eid in London.

The discussion explores local moonsightings, why Eid dates can differ between mosques, and how Cockney communities have celebrated Eid over time. The panel also looks at how Eid celebrations in London have evolved and the best ways to enjoy a hyperlocal Cockney Eid. The main speakers are Imad Ahmed, co-founder of the New Crescent Society, and Puru Miah, a community activist and organiser - both of whom have strong links to London’s East End.

The following day, an in-person gathering will take place at a suitable moon-sighting location in East London, where participants will (hopefully) observe the new crescent moon.

Our moonsighting location this month will be in Wanstead Flats held on Thursday 19th March 2026 (29th Ramadan 1447)

Location: Alexandra Lake Car Park, Wanstead Flats, Aldersbrook Rd, London E12 5DH. Nearest station: Manor Park.

Time: 6:00pm. Maghrib (prayers: optional): 6:15pm. Moonset: 7:06pm.

Join us for one of the most popular crescent moon sightings of the year! This will determine when Ramadan ends, and hopefully when Eid begins.

The gathering is expected on hill near the Alexander Lake where Maghrib prayers can be prayed outdoors, so please bring your own prayer mat if you wish to.

Light snacks for Iftar (end of fast) will be provided. All are welcome.
