Join us for a free guided meadow walk and talk for families on Monday 25th May, 6-7.30pm at Orchard Farm, Mothecombe
Orchard Farm started in 2022 with new entrant farmers, Joe, Jess and their daughter, Winnie.
The Farm is situated on the South Devon Coast at the mouth of the River Erme Estuary, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest set within the South Devon National Landscape. Orchard Farm covers 34 acres of predominantly pastureland that is managed regeneratively to improve biodiversity across a range of habitats, while also producing wool and meat from a much loved flock of Coloured Ryeland, Poll Dorset and Dutch Spotted Sheep.
The Clarkes have managed and restored the meadows which used to be an overgrazed pony paddock for several years. They have taken a regenerative approach which works with natural ecosystems, restoring soil health, improving biodiversity, and creating a landscape where both wildlife and farming can flourish side by side
Since taking on the land, Joe and Jess have embarked on a journey of habitat restoration: reviving wetlands with leaky dams and ponds, planting over 5,000 trees with the Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest, and cultivating orchards bursting with heritage fruit varieties. Nesting boxes have been installed for owls, kestrels, and bats, ensuring the farm remains a thriving habitat for local wildlife.
We will be meeting at Mothecombe School House. The walk is over rough land and up and down steep hillsides so please wear suitable footwear.
