Sensory Exhibition Co-Design Project

Online Workshop 1

Invitation to Participate

You are invited to a research and co-design project led by MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) in partnership with Tom Slater of Call & Response Studios.

Please take time to consider the information below and contact us if you have any questions.

What is the project about?

The Sensory Exhibition Prototype explores how archaeological stories can be experienced through sound, touch and scent, creating heritage experiences that do not rely solely on sight. The project draws on archaeological discoveries previously excavated at the site of Moorfields Eye Hospital in St Pancras, now the location of the new Oriel Eye Health Care Centre.

We are interested in understanding how people with lived experience of visual impairment, and also other disabilities and neurodiversity, engage with heritage. Working together with participants with different abilities, we will develop and test ideas for a multisensory exhibition prototype, which moves away from sight as a requirement for engagement.

Why have I been invited?

You have been invited because you have lived experience of visual impairment and/or other disabilities or neurodiversity and can provide valuable insight into how archaeology and heritage can be made more accessible. We are seeking participants who are willing to share their thoughts, experiences and opinions to help shape the development of the prototype from its earliest stages.

What will taking part involve?

The first activity is an introductory online workshop. The session will be relaxed, informal and discussion-based.

The workshop will include:

  • Welcome and introductions.
  • Discussion and agreement of workshop ground rules.
  • Conversation and exploratory questions led by sound designer Tom Slater
  • A short comfort and facilities break.
  • Discussion of next steps and future workshops.

The schedule may change slightly depending on the discussion and needs of participants. You will be updated beforehand.

Will there be other workshops?

Yes. We anticipate holding additional an in-person workshop in London later this year, and a final testing event where participants will have opportunities to interact with prototype ideas and provide further feedback. Dates, times and venues will be confirmed separately.

Will I receive anything for taking part?

We recognise the value of your time, expertise and lived experience.

Participants who attend this workshop will receive a £40 voucher as a thank you for their contribution.

Will the workshop be recorded?

Yes. The online workshop will be audio recorded and screenshots taken.

Recordings will be used for note-taking and evaluation purposes, helping the project team accurately capture discussions. The screenshots will be used for the final report to our funders. Only members of the project team will have access to the recordings and screen shots. You will be asked for your consent when booking.

What will happen to the information I provide?

Information shared during the workshop will inform the design and evaluation of the Sensory Exhibition Prototype. Participants may be quoted in project reports or presentations.

Information about how your data will be stored, protected and used is provided as part of the booking process.

Do I have to take part?

No. Taking part is entirely voluntary.

You are free to choose whether or not to participate, and you may choose not to answer any question during the workshop. You may also withdraw from the project at any time by contacting the project team.
