Welcome to week three of the festival! This week's concert features artist-in-residence Irina Muresanu as guest soloist in Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D Minor, along with performances of Grant Still’s Festive Overture and Copland’s Symphony No. 3.

Grant Still’s Festive Overture was composed for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s 50th anniversary competition in 1944. It was the winning entry and received praise for its “American flavor,” and reflection of “the warmth of the American people, and the grandeur of Scenic America.” Among the judges were Eugene Goossens (composer of the oboe concerto featured on our June 28 program), and Pierre Monteux, who was at that time conductor of the San Francisco Symphony.

Also on the program is Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D Minor—his only violin concerto and a show-stopping work which spotlights the soloist’s technical precision and artistic expression. Our performance will feature internationally acclaimed violinist and Monteux artist-in-residence Irina Muresanu. Another piece among Monteux’s repertoire, he conducted the concerto in 1944 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded it in 1950 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam.

Copland’s Symphony No. 3 is his final symphony and his longest instrumental work. It exemplifies the Americana sound for which Copland is known, and you may recognize a familiar tune in the finale; he quotes a piece which has become embedded in American popular culture: his own Fanfare for the Common Man.
